The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, travels to the Republic of Fiji to attend the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Foreign Ministers Meeting on 9 August 2024. This marks her fifth visit to Fiji as Foreign Minister, underscoring the Australian Government's commitment to the deep and enduring relationship with Fiji and the broader Pacific community.
Attending the PIF Foreign Ministers Meeting provides an opportunity to exchange ideas and collaborate in the Pacific Way to address shared challenges, including climate change, regional security, and economic growth. Australia envisions a peaceful, stable, prosperous, and unified region, with the Pacific Islands Forum at its core. Together, they work to implement the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, aiming to foster a more interconnected and resilient Pacific.
Discussion also includes Australia’s bid to host the COP31 Climate Change Conference in partnership with Pacific island countries. This effort seeks to highlight the immediate impact of the climate crisis on the region and accelerate global action.
Australia’s Ambassador for First Nations People, Justin Mohamed, accompanies the Minister to the PIF Foreign Ministers Meeting for the first time, bringing First Nations’ perspectives into the discussions and strengthening connections with the PIF community.
During her visit to Suva, the Minister tours the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, a crucial component of Fiji’s health services, and participates in the announcement of the successful tenderer for the CWM infrastructure masterplan, which is vital for addressing Fiji’s health needs.
